First things first...

11/29/12

First things first… I need a concept note. As I begin the research for the concept note I see how much work goes into building you own project. Hard work. I must create a work plan and stick to it so that I can stay on top of things. The important thing is that when I get to Macon I need to have the concept note and work plan and a few other items sorted and ready so that I am able to speak with people that I feel are stakeholders of the community. People that can support and enhance the project within their own capacity. This project excites me… I just hope that I can share that with others so that they are ready to support. But yes… first thing is the concept note!

Yesterday...

11/20/12

Yesterday, I released my self from a cave, so impassioned with an idea to do something bigger that I could not focus until it was settled. “I want to start my own non profit,” I said. This organization would give youth of economically disadvantaged or minority backgrounds the opportunity to experience the world.  It is something I had been thinking about for a while now. I realized in my experience in international development, that it was rare to meet people that shared a similar background with me. I mean, in order to travel abroad you must have the economic means or at least a desire before even stepping foot outside of the country. And many minorities and those of low income backgrounds do not have the money let alone a passport. I want youth to experience life abroad despite any barriers that may inhibit them. Minority and low income youth could greatly benefit from such international exposure and it would also do a world of good to expose the world to a more complete picture of “America”. Americans are not by definition rich or white, you know.

It is somewhat of a necessity for me. Since I have been given so many opportunities to travel the world, further my education and grow both personally and professionally, I want to do that for others… youth who like me simply needed an opportunity.  It is the perfect time. The perfect time to expand the horizons of today’s youth; to expose them to different cultures, different sites, different viewpoints, and best of all give them the chance to better understand themselves and the world.
